HYDERABAD: The World Health Organisation has predicted that India could have the highest number of heart patients in the world in coming years. "The WHO has estimated that over 25 per cent of heart patients in world would be Indians at some stage or other", S.K. Parashar, outgoing president of Cardiological Society of India (CSI) told the 59th annual conference of CSI here on Thursday.

Dr. Parashar warned that cardiovascular diseases could surface in a big way in future. The cardiologists were faced with the non-availability of the right type of stents to take up cardiac surgeries.S.S. Chatterjee, president elect of CSI, said neo-natal and paediatric cardiology was not growing in the country. It was probably because these practices were complicated or not fetching money to doctors.

D. Prasad Rao, Director, Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), said cardiologists were academically superior to doctors in other disciplines of medicine.

The four-day conference was inaugurated by Governor N.D. Tiwari. He said the reversal of brain drain from country with increasing educated youth showing inclination to return home was a welcome feature. He appealed to doctors to give dietary prescriptions to patients to check diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. B. Soma Raju, president of organising committee, also spoke. The delegates would exchange views on different areas of research and progress in treatment of cardiac diseases. Barry H. Greenberg, president of American Society of Heart Failure, would speak on the latest research in treatment of heart failure. Michael H. Picard president of American Society of Echo Cardiolography will demonstrate the latest techniques in echo cardiography.
