Binaural Hearing with Hearing Aids and / or Cochlear Implants in Children

Four in ten children with permanent childhood hearing loss have severe or profound hearing impairment in both ears. Binaural hearing can be provided to these children by either supplying bilateral cochlear implants or combining a hearing aid and a cochlear implant in opposite ears (bimodal fitting). About 50% of children who receive a cochlear implant in one ear have residual hearing in the other ear that can be usefully aided with hearing aids. For these children, binaural benefits can be maximised when a hearing aid is optimised with a cochlear implant. The key to providing effective binaural hearing for these children is to deliver co-ordinated services for adjusting cochlear implants and hearing aids and rehabilitation that encourage the use of binaural hearing within an integrated network of service delivery. |
